Sable’s BIPOC Artist Fund
This fund is dedicated to providing funding for Sable artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color.
In the words of The BIPOC Project,
“We use the term BIPOC to highlight the unique relationship to whiteness that Indigenous and Black (African Americans) people have, which shapes the experiences of and relationship to white supremacy for all people of color within a U.S. context.” (https://www.thebipocproject.org/)
We started this fund in 2019 to help BIPOC Artists attend our Sable Residencies. We recognize that there are systemic barriers that prevent many BIPOC artists from attending artist residencies, camping in the woods, gardening, and living closer to the land. Our hope was to make our experience a little more accessible to those who are interested in coming.
Sable has given over $4,600 in grants to 36 BIPOC Artists so far and plans to give $2000 in grants to 10 more artists in 2024!
The Sable Project has always been shaped by the artists, friends, and neighbors who come to share the land, their work, and a nourishing community. When one of our 2019 artists reached out about making a donation that would allow us to cover a residency for an artist of color, we were inspired to take it one step further and created our BIPOC Artist Fund.
We have always had a commitment to accessibility, and have offered need-based scholarships for many seasons. This was clearly a new opportunity though, one that called on us to do better in supporting the artists in our community most impacted by racism & colonialism. And it fit perfectly with work we are doing to ensure that The Sable Project is guided by our values of Art, Environment, Community, and Collective Liberation.
