Sable Artist Residencies
Our Artist Residency offerings are for adult artists of all ages and disciplines seeking space, time, and a place to focus on their art. We are specifically looking for artists confident in their creative processes, comfortable living in community, and willing to camp out for the duration of their stay.
Sable is off-the-grid! We live in the woods in Vermont’s Green Mountains. There is no electricity or wifi. See our About The Sable Project, Mission and Values, The Sable Land, and Sable’s Structures pages for more details.

What to expect!
Artists arrive to Sable (wow, so beautiful!), get a tour of the land (check out all of Sable’s Structures), and pick out their tent platform. After moving in (artists are expected to bring their own tent and outdoor gear), an orientation, and community agreements, all of the residents and Sable Team share a communal dinner. One day down, 9 to go!
ART: Days are very open-ended at Sable, and our residents have the entire Sable Land as their playground/studio for the duration of their stay. Sable can be a place to deepen your art practice, spark collaborations with fellow residents, and unplug from distractions in the way only living truly off-grid can offer. Each residency session will have an opportunity for residents to share their work with their fellow cohort members during an internal “Art Share.”
LAND: The Sable Land is beautiful, magical, and inspiring. We encourage exploring around the land, there is great swimming nearby, and naps in the field are encouraged!
Since the inception of Sable, an integral part of our residency has been physical engagement with the communal spaces/land. These days, that looks like Garden Time! This consists of 6 hours of work in our gardens over the course of a residency (to grow the food we eat!), and the occasional odd tasks around the land. This time in the garden is a chance to learn some new skills, provides a nice break from your art practice, and is a great opportunity to spend time with your fellow Residents.
COMMUNITY: Sable is a uniquely community-oriented residency. All of our studio spaces are communally shared, and artists get to know and connect deeply with the other members of their cohort. Residents can also expect to spend time developing and showing off their cooking skills during our family-style dinners each evening. Finally, each residency culminates in our bi-weekly Food and Art Fridays public event, where artists are welcome (but not required) to share their work and connect with the local Vermont community.
Residency Fee & Deposit: $500 for 10 days. This fee contributes to the cost of food, general supplies, and infrastructure provided during your residency. If accepted, you will be asked to send a $150 non-refundable deposit (which will count towards your residency fee) along with your final commitment.
There is a $10 application fee. Our application fee contributes to the cost of processing applications and planning our season. We also hope that it inspires potential applicants to pause and submit their best work. Please contact us at apply@thesableproject.org if you have any questions or concerns.
Sable’s BIPOC Artist Fund offers grants for Summer Artists and Guest Artists in Residence. If you are Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color, you are eligible for a small grant! Make sure to check the box on the application.
It is important to us that Sable is accessible to all! No one will be turned away if you can't afford our residency fee. Please contact us at apply@thesableproject.org for grant opportunities.
